Nervous Democrats
We now know that Obama misrepresented the truth in his speech to a joint session in Congress last September 9th. We also know that the Democrats voted against at least two amendments proposed by Republicans on the issue of health care and undocumented immigration. Several think-tanks have already shown that Joe Wilson was right about the facts. Joe Wilson did not call the President a “liar,” but rather he said he was lying. There is a difference.
Obama said: “There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false -the reforms I´m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.” The fact remains to be half true. H.R. 3200 does not explicitly pay for health benefits for undocumented immigrants. The issue is enforcement and the provisions in H.R. 3200 are completely inadequate to ensure that illegal immigrants do not illegally obtain health care through the bill.
This is aside from the fact that Obama himself used the word “illegals” (the word that Democrats say we Republicans and Conservatives use to demonize the undocumented immigrants).
Obama misrepresented the truth not only on this particular topic, but also in at least ten issues as shown by the Heritage Foundation’s “Obama Speech Fact Check”: on the funding of abortions, on the number of citizens who cannot get health care (in August Obama said there were 48 million, one month later he said there are 30…), on the impact to the deficit…
Fortunately Joe Wilson’s words opened the eyes of the Obama administration causing them to backtrack in some key areas. For example, let’s take the Obama administration’s announcement on the weekend following the speech (that is after Obama’s speech and after the Wilson episode) regarding barring undocumented workers from participating in the health insurance exchange. What this shows is that Obama was not criticized by pro-undocumented Latino Democrats before the speech, but rather after the speech when he was forced by the Wilson’s episode to clarify his position.
Despite the White House’s version, the truth is that before Obama’s speech to Congress, the President was on board with providing health care for undocumented immigrants taking advantage of a lack of provisions for enforcement in H.R. 3200. They thought nobody would notice… But Joe Wilson did… this changing the course and nature of the debate. Consequently, for liberals, Wilson had to be rebuked in Congress and also called a “racist.” We have seen the issue of race used by pundits on the Left and even by Jimmy Carter.
The Obama administration was exposed by Joe Wilson. How do we know that? Take a look at the criticism leveled last September 14 against Obama by Representative Luis V. Gutierrez, a Democrat from Illinois (4th District) who actually was the first Latino member of Congress to endorse Barack Obama for president. Congressman Gutiérrez made his remarks in Washington, D.C. five days after Obama’s speech to Congress, while participating in a panel discussion on immigration reform sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Gutiérrez was incensed by the Obama administration’s announcement during the weekend that it was going to bar undocumented workers from participating in the health insurance exchange. Gutierrez called out the President, causing Obama to immediately (within 2 days) personally appear at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.
Obama and the Democrats are getting nervous. Furthermore, we now know that the fight is really inside the Democrat Party, not between them and the Republicans. The Democrats have majorities in both the House and the Senate to pass whatever their leaders and the President want to pass. Yet, they are powerless to move their initiatives forward because the American people have opened their eyes.
The Democrats are nervous. They know that the American people are truly fed up. Using race and attacking those who disagree with them seems to be their only solution.
